ABOUT

'Subjects of the Painter', along with my other blogs 'Notes on Colour Mixing' and 'Courbet's Tent', responded to the burgeoning number of painting blogs and YouTube videos, by painters, for painters, at that time.

Amongst what might be called 'the originals', in the U.S.A. there were Sharon Butler's 'Two Coats of Paint', Loren Munk's 'The James Kalm Report' (now 'Rough Cuts') and Brett Baker's 'Painters' Table'. In Ireland there was James Merrigan's '+Billion-', and in England there were Neill Clement's '(fundamental) Painting' and '(standard )Interview'.

All of these blogs were the inspiration for Subjects of the Painter, which began at the very end of 2010 and to which I am now returning in our Covid-19 times. Whilst there is no proper substitute for painters visiting each other's studios and exhibitions, and sharing ideas face-to-face, this blog hopes to create a space for painting dialogue and ideas that can be shared widely online, by anyone. I hope you enjoy it.
